Kashiwagi Art Foundry

The history of the foundry industry in Odawara dates back centuries. The book, Shinpen Sagaminokuni Fudokiko, notes that Yamada Jirozaemon opened a foundry in Odawara in 1534. This is considered the origin of the first foundry in Odawara.

In 1686 the Kashiwagi family relocated to Odawara. The family opened a foundry and became Odawara's renowned maker of sound instruments called sahari made using compression casting techniques.

The Kashiwagi family nowadays still is the leading producer of Odawara casting.

Description

Details

This wind chime, or "Furin" in japanese, has the conic shape of the Mount Fuji, fine details are engraved on it such as shape representing the clouds around the top of the mountain and japanese Kanji characters at its base.

The sound of the bell is extremely clear and neat creating a very relaxing atmosphere. Being fully handmade, each piece is slightly different from another and thus unique. The specificity of Kashiwagi Art Foundry is the "砂張 - Sahari" metal use for the creation of their "鳴りもの - Narimono" meaning bells.

The Sahari is an alloy of copper and, at least, 20% of tin which gives its sturdiness and beautiful sound to the furin. However, in spite of its appearance, Odawara Furin are quite fragile and if they drop on the floor, the perfection of its shape will bend and the wind chime will not produce any sound.

A great point with the Odawara Furin is the possibility of choosing the color of the Tanzaku, the piece of paper hanging from the bell which catches the wind.

IMPORTANT:

This product is handmade and each piece is different from another. Also, with time the golden color will change and become more like ash-gold.
