Kiriko is a Japanese colored glass craft known for its unique engraved patterns. A glassblower blows clear glass into a paper-thin shape of colored glass and then rotates it to make the overall form. The result is a two-layer structure with colored glass on the outside and clear glass on the inside. By cutting patterns into the outside surface, a vivid contrast of color and transparent glass is created. There are two main regions producing Kiriko glass, the region of Tokyo producing the famous Edo Kiriko and the region of Satsuma in the South of Japan which is also very famous for its wide choice of colors. Edo Kirikokan is a Tokyo based craft company for Edo Kiriko. Edo Kirikokan produces in its own cutting studio attached to the gallery and also represents a group of independent craftsmen. It is located in Sumida city, a ward of Tokyo well known for its high concentration of traditional Japanese crafts. |
