This beautiful portfolio is created with "COLLOTYPE", a unique printing method that was invented in France and perfected by Japanese craftsman over 150 years. Rich, opaque pigment ink is carefully printed on paper, layer by layer, for an unparalleled depth, detail and intensity, even in black and white.

Shoji Ueda (1913-2000) was one of Japan’s most prominent modernist photographers and continues to be one of the nation’s most highly regarded. Working mostly in his home prefecture of Tottori, he frequently incorporated surrealist imagery into his photographs. He often used his wife and three children as subjects, with the local landscape of sand dunes as a backdrop.

*Limited edition* (30 copies).
If all copies are sold by the craftsman, we may have to cancel pending orders.

The Benrido Atelier has collected six of Ueda’s most cherished images for inclusion in this finely printed collotype portfolio. These six pictures are seminal works from his series SAND DUNE.

  • Collotype is an interesting fusion between French and Japanese discoveries. The printing process was discovered in France, about 150 years ago. It was a new style of printing that combines photography and printmaking and the results are one-of-a-kind. BENRIDO was established in 1887 in Kyoto, where they have been specializing in Collotype printing since 1905. With over a century of experience in the craft, they are one of the very few Collotype studios left, and the world’s only one that produces full-color photographic Collotype prints. They have won several awards and recognitions and have been responsible for many big art works and projects in Japan and abroad.

Born in Sakaiminato, Tottori prefecture (former Sakai-machi, Sakai-gun) in 1913, Ueda received high acclaim for his work through his participation in amateur photography clubs and publication of his works in photo magazines. Until he passed away in 2000, he had permanently based himself in his hometown, producing his most notable “Children the Year Around” (1955-1970), the Dunes series which were set in the Tottori Sand Dunes, and a nostalgic series portraying various locales in Izumo.
