Maruyama Ōryū (1733~1795) was born in Kameoka City, Kyoto Prefecture.
Born as the second son of a farmer, he studied under Ishida Yuyo (a member of the Kano school) in Kyoto from his late teens.
His representative work is the national treasure "Snow Pine Folding Screen" in the collection of the Mitsui Memorial Museum of Art.
He was active in the middle ~ late Edo period, and became the founder of the "Maruyama School", which continues to the modern Kyoto art scene.
Among his disciples is Nagasawa Ashiyuki, who painted the famous "Tiger Diagram" (Wakayama, Mukuji Collection), which is famous for its cat-like tiger.
