A new style of Tatami mats

inSTYLE (Formerly SOEJIMA) is a Japanese producer of products using IGUSA rush grass inspired by the simple beauty of Tatami mats.

The company is located in Fukuoka in the Kyushu region, which is Japan's main production area for rush grass. inSTYLE uses Japanese rush grass that has been grown the traditional way to achieve the highest possible quality of its mats.

Many products have been developed with famous Japanese designers allowing to combine the Japanese traditional feeling of Tatami mats with Western contemporary interior design.

inSTYLE's products feel very natural and last for a long time.

inSTYLE  uses a proprietary technique called KAKEGAWA-ORI allowing to weave up to 50% more rush grass into the mats.

The result is a tatami that lasts much longer and also ages beautifully.

inSTYLE 's mats are therefore popular as contemporary interior with a Japanese touch.

How inSTYLE's Tatami are Made

Cultivation_of_Igusa
Inspection_of_Igusa

Since hundreds of years the basic material for making Tatami mats is IGUSA rush grass. It is mainly cultivated in the Kyushu region of Southern Japan. IGUSA grows in wetlands and it is harvested in May and June.

After being harvested the farmers select the ones that are most suitable in terms of length and thickness to become Tatami mats.

The raw stems are then dyed and colored. After drying damaged stems are being removed and only the best stems are used for the next production step.

The stems are then weaved using inSTYLE's proprietary technology into mats including 50% more IGUSA than conventional Tatami. The mats are then sun-dried.

Large Tatami mats are then cut to the required size and the borders finished. At the end the Tatami is inspected and small imperfections are being fixed.
