It is a kagami mochi with diatomaceous earth plastering finish. The gentle texture unique to natural materials fits into any interior, regardless of whether it is Japanese or Western.

Kagami mochi is a traditional Japanese New Year's decoration made of rice cake. The two rice cakes symbolize the past year and the new one that's about to come. The overlapping of the two mochi also represents the moon (yin) and the sun (yang). (these crafted versions are made of diatomaceous earth and not edible).

“Kagami” means “mirror” in Japanese, and it is often said that the shape of the mochi resembles a bronze mirror, considered a treasure by the ancient Japanese. By doubling the mochi it is believed that your luck and fortune will double too, and the decorations are recommended to be placed throughout your home!
The white-on-white style is very common. The white-and-pink was traditionally offered to rulers in the Kanazawa area as the white/red color combinations have traditionally been regarded as lucky. The orange part on top represents "daidai" - a Japanese citrus whose name reminds of "generations" and is therefore used as symbol to wish for
 (healthy) continuation of a family.

This cute Kagami Mochi that you will want to leave out not only during the year-end and New Year holidays but forever! Everything is made of natural materials, including the colored parts, so it is safe for families with small children and pets.

  • Note: Diatomaceous earth also known as D.E. , diatomite, or kieselgur/kieselguhr, is a naturally occurring, soft, siliceous sedimentary rock that is easily crumbled into a fine white to off-white powder. It has a particle size ranging from less than 1 micrometre to more than 1 millimeter, but typically 10 to 200 micrometres. This powder has an abrasive feel, similar to pumice powder, and is very light as a result of its high porosity.
