This is the classic masu sake cup. It is has a square shape with a capacity of 1 'go' or about 180 ml. The traditional 'Tsuru 鶴' crane design represents a symbol of good fortune and longevity due to the crane's rumored life span of a thousand years. They are considered a national treasure and often appear in art, literature and folklore. It is furthermore a symbol of fidelity and loyalty, as cranes are known to mate for life! The Japanese character represents the traditional writing of the word "寿" kotobuki, meaning 'celebration'; It therefore is the perfect masu cup for a celebration ceremony, and in combination with the cranes an ideal wedding attribute.
The Japanese hinoki cypress has a nice wooden scent adding a sensation to the beautiful flavor of sake rice wine. Enjoy your sake in true Japanese style! Kanpai! The cups can also be used to serve deserts, snacks, spices, bath salt, a gift box, or as a base for table pieces and DIY crafts!
Hinoki trees are not only beautiful, but also believed to have a cleansing and purifying effect; The wood has a long-lasting, calming fragrance, antibacterial and stress-relieving properties and even suppresses the formation of mould, bacteria and mite. It is therefore a popular material for construction and in sushi kitchens. Masu cups are crafted from the left-overs of these constructions - no wood is cut for their production alone.
Masuya is a company specialized in the manufacturing of masu sake cups. It is located in Ogaki city, which accounts for about 80% of the production of masu cups in Japan. Masuya also developed a range of contemporary products inspired by masu cups made of Hinoki cypress.
Masu cups have played an important part in Japanese traditions for over 1300 years. The small square cups made of Hinoki wood were originally used to measure rice and other food items, especially when they were still a trading currency.
MASUYA was established in 1950 and has been making high-quality masu cups for over 60 years. Next to traditional masu cups, they also have a wide range of other Hinoki products, including a unique, ecological humidifier, drinking sets, and even customizable cups.
