The history of Mino Ware dates back to the year 905, when it gained mention as one of the places that produce fine ceramics. It is glazed stoneware which can vary from red to grey. There are many varieties of Mino Ware and they can be left plain or decorated with simple motifs. The centers for Mino Ware are Tajimi city and Toki city in Gifu prefecture.The glaze is made from ashes and called shirashi and produces beautiful gradation in colors.
Mino-style porcelain (tea) cups with a characteristic high relief design on the inside edge. It's lovely and fits right in your hand. The relief has been pinched by hand, requiring very steady fingers from experiences craftsmen, and are therefore very easy to hold. They are made by baking white porcelain clay, which contains many glass particles, at temperatures as high as 1340 degrees. They are available in 5 colors, all matching the porcelain 'TANE' teapots in design and color.
