Edo Kiriko is Tokyo's own cut-glass craft. It began in 1834 and is now one of Japan's officially designated traditional crafts. Artisans cut fine patterns by hand into glass, often through a thin layer of color, so the clear glass beneath catches the light like a jewel.
Hirota Glass, founded in Tokyo in 1899, has produced Kiriko cut glass for over a century, and it takes years of training before an artisan works to Hirota's standard.
