This wooden container is perfect for storing cooked rice for up to a day. It keeps the rice humid and the antiseptic effect of the Japanese cedar protects the rice. The rice does not become yellow and hard quickly as compared to modern rice cookers. It also is a beautiful object suitable for serving rice to your family and guests.

If you take it for a picnic you will appreciate the very light weight of the container. The Kurikyu rice container received the Good Design Award as well as the Craft Center Japan Award.

  • First time use: The wood is dry and will make the rice stick. Wet it with water and dry with a cloth for the first use.
    Cleaning instructions:
    1. Soak the container in warm water.
    2. Wash carefully with a sponge and rinse off any leftover food.
    3. Fill with hot water and leave 2-3 minutes
    4. Quickly dry with a towel and leave on its side to dry (so the air can flow through)
Do NOT leave the container flat while it's drying
    • While the container is new the scent of hinoki is very strong and will give an aroma to your rice. The color may be impacted first. This will lessen as the container is used more.

    Good Design Award

Japanese Odate Bentwood work is made of Japanese cedar cut into very thin slices. The wood is cooked in boiling water until it becomes flexible so that it can be bended into various shapes. The end pieces of the bentwood are fixed together with dark cherry bark, which not only makes a nice dark accent on the light wood but also creates a durable and natural bond.

Kurikyu Bentwood is known for its high quality Bentwood work typical for the city of Odate in northern Japan. The company is run by Shunji Kurimori who represents the sixth generation of proprietors. He received many awards for his craft and also exhibited in many countries outside of Japan.

  • Please do not use boiling water when cleaning your Odate bentwood. Ideally, the crafts are washed with tepid water and tenderly wiped down with a cloth straight after. Scrubbing, brushing and the use of cleansers may damage the product.

Also avoid storing the product in direct sun light as this may affect the color.
