This is a traditional Japanese seasoning made from red shiso (Perilla) leaves. Shiso is a versatile ingredient, often used in the Asian kitchen. The leaves itself are a bit spicy with a hint of cinnamon and are very rich in calcium and iron. They are believed to contain cancer-fighting properties and help improve blood circulation. 
Due to their strong flavor, they are ideal to use for pickling, or to compliment dishes like sashimi and tempura. 

This Shiso no mai mix is made by mincing salt-pickled shiso leaves. The mix resembles the famous spice mix "Yukari", which is a popular rice topping in Japan. Different from most other "furikake" rice toppings, this powder is extremely soft, which allows you to use it on cold dishes too - as it does not need the steam of hot rice to make the dried flakes edible!
