Drinking after work is quite a tradition in Japan and bars and Izakaya restaurants are usually filled with "salary men" in the evenings. In Japanese the work sake describes any type of alcoholic beverage.

The most famous Japanese alcohol is of course "nihonshu" sake rice wine. But other alcohols such as shochu spirit, umeshu liqueur or whiskey are also very popular. Since a few years Japan also started to cultivate white and red wines, which are not yet well known internationally.

Many regions are famous for a specific type of alcohol and traveling Japan allows enjoying a large variety of different flavors.
