Starting up in 1970, TOMIOKA is renowned for their highly skilled craftsmen and their combinations of modern design with traditional art work. Their aim is to continue to provide the highest quality of art work for many years to come, and transfer their craftsmanship to the next generations.
There are about five companies remaining who still master the traditional, complex art form that was passed down from generation to generation. One of these companies is TOMIOKA SHOTEN.
Kabazaiku is a uniquely Japanese art form that used the national tree, Sakura, and turns its bark into beautiful, long lasting products.
The art originated during the Edo era (1603 – 1868) and was discovered by one of the many Samurai in that time. Whereas many first mastered the art as a second job during quit and financially poor periods, it became a proper occupation after the Meiji restoration (1868–1912) which forced an end to the lifestyle of the Samurai.
